Dynamic Gloucestershire

Map of Gloucestershire

Suddenly Gloucestershire keeps appearing on the computer screen! Over the last few weeks we’ve had a number of encouraging contacts in the county, and are finding out about even more initiatives that we might be able to tap into.

Our key interest has been working with the Gloucestershire Rifle Association on their plans for a super new indoor .22 range at their existing outdoor range facility. On a recent visit we discovered that this is a really exciting project, which will be fully disabled-accessible, because the association wants to encourage and promote more disabled and less-able people to join the sport. We wish them every success with it.

Linked to this has been a new contact we have made, Jacob (Jake) Pryszlak, who runs the @Sport4_all account on Twitter. Jake is working hard on finding people interested in setting up a new disabled multi sports club in the Gloucester area. He’d like target shooting to be one of the sports on offer, so we’ve put him in touch with the county association and hope that they can help him to make it all happen.

Already established is the No Limits inclusive sports club, based at the University of Gloucester. Having just found them on Twitter (@LimitsClub) we’ll encourage them to add target airgun shooting to the sports they offer.

A brand new initiative in the county, launched in November 2013, is PING – Physical Inclusion Network Gloucestershire, which aims to support all aspects of daily life for those in the county with disabilities. Their website has a Sports, Leisure & Activities section, and we hope to see some target shooting appearing there in due course! Twitterers can follow them on @PinGlos1 and they are also on Facebook.

The Barnwood Trust is something else that came to our attention recently. This offers funding for Gloucestershire residents with disabilities and mental health conditions, and we know of one disabled shooter who received a grant from them for new air pistol equipment.

It’s really good to see a number of initiatives like this in one place. Hopefully they are being supported by the County Sports Partnership, Active Gloucestershire. Details of what is on offer for disabled and less-able sport through their Active Inclusion programme are worth checking out.

All in all, we look forward to seeing plenty of target shooting options opening up in 2014 for disabled and less-able people in the county.
